Brantford's Black History

Why Mohawk Park Matters

In 1903, the anniversary of Emancipation Day was celebrated in Mohawk Park.  It was well attended by residents of Brantford, as well as visitors from Guelph, Woodstock, Hamilton and Toronto.

The celebration included dancing in the pavilion, sporting events, picnics and boating in the lake. Though racial tension was normal at this time, this event and others like it gave a glimpse of how wonderful integration could be.
